Betsy's Birthday Party

A free Saturday, with nothing to do in it, is a rare occasion at Corgi Hollows.

I found myself unscheduled at the Deli on Saturday, and I woke up with the delightful prospect of choosing ANYTHING to do for a day!

I had options. I had signed up for a bike maintenance workshop which would have dovetailed with my deli work. I need to replace a tire on my old Schwinn bike and I've wanted to figure out the intricacies of tire removal. My husband, the engineer of all talents, has had his time monopolized with water issues around the house.

Water continues to plague Corgi Hollows. This is a typical Minnesotan problem. (We have over 11,000 lakes, and that isn't including the swamps and ponds that make Corgi Hollows sort of an island.) My husband has become a civil engineer recently...

My Facebook reminded me of an event I had clicked "interested" on weeks ago.

"Betsy's Birthday Party"

For years (almost 30) I have driven up and down the 169/60 corridor on my way to and from my parents' home and my parents'-in law home in Iowa.

Mankato is about an hour from Minneapolis.

For me, Mankato is synonymous with Betsy, the heroine of the Betsy-Tacy books by Maud Hart Lovelace. I'm one of those people who read the series as a youngster, re-read them as an adult, read them out loud to my home-schooled kids, and generally loved them.

I've always loved historical fiction. I like the history, I like the interesting story lines. I love biography. The Betsy-Tacy series fits all these genres.

Maud is practically retelling her childhood in these books.

As I drove though Mankato I always made a mental note, "I need to stop here and do the Betsy stuff someday!"

That day was Saturday!

I roused Cheri from bed and announced the upgrade in plans. She was game. We quickly jumped in the car and off we drove.

"Betsy's Birthday Party" was advertised as a journal-writing event with cake and punch to celebrate Betsy's April birthday. A tour of the her childhood home was offered as well.

Cheri and I arrived on the dot at 1:00 pm and the fun began!

The Betsy-Tacy society has purchased the two houses in which Betsy and Tacy spent their childhood. Betsy's is refurnished as closely as possible to the way it was for her family in the 1890's. Tacy's house, also with a period flair, is the society's headquarters, with a gift shop and meeting room.

The brass bowl is in Tacy's house. (You need to read the books to know about that.)

We were furnished with a map of Mankato that had all the relevant sites marked on it pertaining to historic events for Maud/Betsy. We drove around finding a few other places (Tib's house, Little Syria, the site of the high school, up the big hill, etc.).

There are photographs of many of the characters depicted in the series, also the "rest of the story" historical facts that fill out any story-line. Original illustrations from the series are framed on the walls of Tacy's house. Mementos and artifacts from Maud-Hart Lovelace's life in California and New York are there. We saw a lot of material that any avid fan could spend hours of time combing through.

The staff at the site are really helpful and friendly. They love the area, and the era 1890-1915. It was fun to chat with them. We sat down over birthday cake and punch to discuss favorite books, interesting details and history. What a fun job for them!

People from all over the world visit this little site. The Betsy series has fans from everywhere. "You've Got Mail," a popular romance movie, specifically mentions the series, and I think sparked modern interest in it.

Lovelace is a gifted writer. Although the books naturally appeal to girls, they interest boys too. I can't recommend them more highly. The transforming era of 1900 is brought to life.

Go find them at the library this week :)

Cheri and I stopped at the Traverse Des Sioux Treaty Site in St. Peter on the way home. That's just off of 169. We made it a real history field trip day.

I miss being able to do this as frequently with Cheri as we did when the older kids were little.  Life changes. You simply cannot raise all your kids in the exact same way! Times change, life changes. I cannot feel guilty, though I do sometimes. Cheri has completely different activities and a different environment from what the older ones had.

But it is fun to try to fit in one of these special trips every once in awhile. I'm so glad it worked out for Saturday.

It was a perfect day.

Want to Be Elite?

I have linked to some interesting discussion on Marxism below.

My first question is this; If someone were to accuse you, would the accusation fit? Does the evidence support the accusation? Has there been a change that refutes the charges?

Anytime someone accuses anyone of something there should be hard evidence, not just a feeling.

Feelings and intuition can really save us from a lot of grief, but overall we must rely on hard evidence.

As someone ostracized by many people for my beliefs, I am not afraid to go out on a limb and offer hard evidence of Satanic/Atheistic influence in our culture, the church, and even in my own circles.

My circle is ever decreasing, the circle of trusted, like-minded friends.

Recently I had a discussion with someone I really care about. I presented the evidence of my worldview and the support for that evidence. This person chose to ignore my views, close his eyes to any evidence I presented, and simply walk away.

So it is.

God warned us that this would happen. He said that our faith would divide us. I shouldn't be surprised when it actually does. But it does surprise.

And I feel hurt.

God reveals his truth to anyone who is willing to listen. The Holy Spirit bears witness of the Truth in our hearts.

I watched the movie "Fragments of Truth" last night. One thing stood out for me, and that was the trust in the Holy Ghost to give wisdom, truth, and direction. He does that still, and I'm thankful for the Word of God and His Spirit to help me understand His truth.

As the world, the church, and your friends, slip quietly towards Marxist Socialism remember the past. Remember that Socialism has never worked. It has only ever resulted in death and anguish.

It is a brain-child of Lucifer, and he will not relent in implementing it all over the world. Is it the coming one-world system? Possibly. Probably. That we will have to wait on.

If you desire to be one of the Marxist Elites you can ride the trends toward Socialism and pay your respects to the powers of this world. You can slide down that path toward eternal death.

Satan has infiltrated the church in a masterful way. The wooing of preachers like NT Wright, Tim Keller, and Brian McClaren have transformed the intellectuals that once praised evangelism.

God gives grace to the humble. Intellectuals are not that. Never aspire to be an intellectual. Aspire to be a student of God's Word. It is the only path to eternal happiness.

Give up the path to elitism. It is so cruel. Only a few can be the elite. The rest of humanity must be enslaved.  Or eliminated.

Wake up to Marxism as it permeates the very things we loved.

Wake up.

12 Steps

1. God loves you more than anyone else does. He will let you hit bottom if it takes that to get your attention. He is the hound of heaven, but he never forces anyone. You are free to choose hell.

2.  Repentance is a "must" step to get right with God.  Repent. Stop sinning. Ask the Holy Spirit for supernatural power to cleanse and overcome sin.

3.  Signs of true conversion: love for others, insatiable desire for the Bible, grateful heart to God.

4. Desire to do God's will. Desire to do what is right. Desire for righteous living.

5. Immediate conviction of sin in your life. The Holy Spirit points out one area at a time for you to work on. Addictions are the first to be addressed.

6. So, addictions. God cares. Pray for an immediate loathing for the substance. Pray for strength to never touch it again. Children, don't ever THINK about trying an addictive substance. It is the seeds of thought that begin the journey to slavery. Take those thoughts "captive" as Scripture says. Just ask God to help you figure this out. I say "Take that captive, Lord" and seek immediate distraction. God has honored that for me. He will show you how.

7. Confess your sin. You need the help of God's family. You are not to do it alone. Show your spiritual family your vulnerability and let them keep you accountable.

8. Cry out to God. This is the example of Biblical saints. It works. God hears your cry of repentance and weakness. He gets the glory in your weakness, and He is jealous of His glory. This isn't about you. It's about Him. That is who He is. Get over yourself.

9. Back to the Word. If you are filled with the Holy Spirit you will have fewer desires to be filled with carnal desires. RUN to the Word for strength.

10. Do the next thing, as Elisabeth Elliot said. Go clean house, start a project, read a book! Think of ways to go the extra mile at work. Just DO SOMETHING.

11. Eyes fixed on Jesus. Remember His sacrifice for YOUR sin. Don't cheapen that sacrifice by continuing in sin. STOP sinning. When you do sin, you have an advocate. Jesus. He covered it. But STOP sinning.

12. Rest in His power. Keep a clear conscience. Take everything to Him. Pray constantly. God has promised to show you His power, but be prepared for tribulation. It's part of the deal. Your surf board is His power to get over the waves of tribulation. That is the most exciting thing in all of life. Think of all the stories written down about this supernatural help. Tap into that power, hope in it, and give God the glory.

You are loved.
